My cute doggie, to be exact. This is Jakie. He’s a ten-years-and-eight-months-old golden retriever who thinks he’s still a puppy. Despite the fact that his hips have gradually succumbed to arthritis, he loves hiking, swimming, and begging for bread. He’s very good at begging for bread because he knows who exactly in our family can’t resist him.

Jakie is exceptionally tolerant of my sister and me putting random junk on him. Like the blanket she made him for Christmas or my mom’s hat and sunglasses.

He also does the sad puppy face incredibly well. I know. I only learn from the best.

Regularly scheduled posting will resume…later.

…’cause it’s my blog and I can.

This Wednesday, TKD is having a fundraiser called Kick-a-Thon. We’ll be throwing 1000 kicks (each!) and breaking boards as well. The money we raise is split between the Special Olympics (we’re a platinum sponsor), the National Collegiate Taekwondo Association, and our club.

If you’d like to donate, there are a couple ways to do it. You can donate per kick (i.e. a penny per kick = $10 total), as a flat donation, or by buying a board for $5. You can write stuff on the board (like a question from your thermo pset or the face of your least favorite ex…), and I’ll break it using a method of your choice. Since I’m a n00b-y yellow belt, my repertoire of kicks is rather limited. HOWEVER, you can also opt to have second degree black belt Bobby break it in some kickass fashion.

Observe:

If you’re on campus, you are very welcome to come watch the splinters fly. If you can’t make it, I’ll have my camera there (and possibly my laptop+webcam), so your personal board break will be captured on video and sent to you. If you’d like, I can mail you the pieces of the board, too. :)

Please do consider donating because this is really important to us. It not only supports the club in what we do, but also helps support the sport of taekwondo and the spirit of athletes who are bent but not broken.

And another picture of how fierce Bobby is, for emphasis. You know you want to see him kick the crap out of a board.

(Why, no, I’m not whoring him out for charity at all.)

If you’d like to donate, please either email me or leave a comment. Thank you all so much! :)

In order to procrastinate studying for my two upcoming exams, I was re-reading some of my old Livejournal entries (holy crap…). Aside from being horrified at my emo and whiny nature, I found this gem. It’s my favorite lolcat picture ever, and it actually inspires me to work hard and become a good veterinarian. ‘Cause there are still lots of kitties to be saved all around the world, and I want to be their hero.

This semester, one of the course 7 electives I’m taking is Immunology. Now, you’d think immunology is a super awesome subject, right? I mean, the immune system is fascinating–it’s constantly evolving and adapting and it goes through so many levels to keep your body safe from intruders.

Not so with the current  7.23 professor! She’s an older woman with the most soporific voice in the entire world. Try as I might, I can never bully my consciousness into staying alert for the entire two hours and always end up either falling asleep or fooling around on my laptop. Hopefully, the other two professors who teach this class will be better lecturers, but from what I’ve heard from past students, I shouldn’t keep my hopes up too much.

But check out this picture from the second lecture (click on it for a larger image). The yellow blobs are macrophages, and they look so happy! This picture has thus far been the highlight the class.

I made dinner tonight. Bobby helped. It was delicious. Here are two pictures:

Here is the recipe. Try it. It’s delicious. Now I just need to figure out how to pronounce “bourguignon”.

Fun picture meme. :)

Go check out Leslie’s pictures from the SF Prop 8 protest this past Saturday. It’s at once beautiful and heartbreaking.

I really wish I could’ve gone to the Boston protest.

I feel like I write one of these entries every year, but the sentiment never seems to fade. Halloween was my favorite holiday growing up (strange as it is to think of “growing up” in the past tense). A day to step outside your own shoes. A day when it’s okay to pretend you’re someone you’re not. I loved dressing up and, as much as possible, made my own costumes. During my senior year of high school, I sewed a Captain Hook coat for myself and a Peter Pan tunic for Victor. I also had the most ridiculous hat, complete with a gigantic feather. Good times, good times.

I was reading an LJ entry from freshman year about how I was disappointed in the days leading up to Halloween at MIT. Sure, the leaves were gorgeous and much more Halloween-y than in Fremont, but nobody seemed to notice. Everyone was too busy with work and psets…even I had an exam on November 1 (honestly…what kind of professor gives an exam on the day after Halloween?!). Nevertheless, I donned my (default) gangster costume and traipsed around Harvard Square in a game of Cruel 2 B Kind.

This year, I didn’t even notice Halloween creeping up on me until someone decorated the Next House TFL (first floor lounge) with huge posters of spiders/rats/miscellaneous cretins yesterday in a mysterious fit of festivity. I suppose I really am getting too old for this holiday. Even the dorm trick-or-treating event was open to freshmen (plus a few ambitious sophomores) only. How depressing.

(This last one actually scared me a little when I finally noticed it because I didn’t see it the first few times I walked by… ^^;;)

Whatever. I refuse to be pragmatic about this. There’s this house in my neighborhood back home that looks like a gothic castle. The couple living there don’t have any children, I think partly because they are both still children at heart. They go all out with decorations for every holiday, especially Halloween, complete with fake lightning and skeletons being guillotined on the front lawn. They give out full-sized candy bars while dressed in the most elaborate costumes.

I want to be just like them when I grow up.

So here’s to next year’s Halloween, and never being too old to let your imagination run wild.

P.S. Happy birthday James! ^^

I’m sure you’re all tired of reading words. So here: pictures. None of them belong to me, ’cause I dropped my camera one too many times, and the flash is broken. (Side note: anyone know where I could get it fixed?) Click for larger versions! ^^

OMG want. I used to be pretty active in the Threadless community–rating submissions, submitting slogans, placing bulk orders during sales…the whole shebang–but lately, I’ve felt like the printed shirts haven’t been up to par with some of the old stuff. This one, however, is SUPERCUTE. Bunnies+giraffes+green. What more could I ask for?

MIT Sport TKD Club

Credit to Jackie (my TKD big sister and club president) for this one. MIT Sport TKD Club! I feel a lot of undeserved pride, since I contributed nothing to the win, but I’d like to think that I will sometime in the near future. :)

ATS = love!

Some members of my family away from home at ITASA this past February. I love ATS. :)

I really wish my camera hadn’t crapped out on me, because I really want to show you guys the view outside my window! It’s nothing short of breathtaking, and it’s not even the best view in Next House. The trees are on fire and the ground is covered with fallen leaves. A little before noon, the sun shines just so, and lights up the Charles River spectacularly. Before October hit, I didn’t know I had a river view because all I could see outside was a big mass of green foliage. But now? Now I want it to stay autumn forever.
